Description

This tapestry is part of the suite of the six famous hangings of the Lady of the Unicorn. Five of these tapestries are about the five senses. The sixth depicts a richly dressed lady standing in front of a tent with the words 'À MON SEUL DÉSIR' on a blindfold.

Here, the organ, a musical instrument, represents one of the five senses in this tapestry: hearing.

The sense of hearing is perfectly represented. All the actors in the scene are listening to the sound of the instrument, whether it is the lion or the unicorn, who are very attentive, or the following woman who is following the instrumentalist with her eyes so as not to miss the moment when the bellows need to be activated.

On closer inspection, one can see that the lion, representing strength, and the unicorn, representing purity, are also depicted on the organ's uprights, thus highlighting the separation between the follower and the Lady.

The latter is also exaggeratedly tall to emphasise her social superiority, an element confirmed by the richness of her attire.

Finally, the richness of the composition, with the presence of a good number of details, should be noted.

ATTENTION: The size 220 x 280 cm is with an added border which is not shown here. Please contact us.
