This Jacquard tapestry“le toucher” is from the series of the Lady with Unicorn. In this tapestry, the sense of touch is emphasized. Framed by the lion and the unicorn, the Lady holds the horn in one hand and the staff in the other. It is this contrast between delicacy and firmness that gives the piece its meaning. Even so, the Lady shows a certain modesty in turning away from the animal. The most surprising thing about this tapestry is the lack of symmetry, even if this is restored by the presence of the Lady in the center. It is the Lady who links the different planes: the unicorn in the first and the staff in the third. The artist behind the tapestry “le toucher” shows a certain casualness in not creating perspective. The trees are simply aligned, creating a parallel with the staff. The light is caught by the Lady’s velvet dress. It also reveals the ermine lining on the side. This reproduction is woven in Halluin stitch, giving the tapestry a very fine quality of execution. It is woven in France. And like all the tapestries on this site, a certificate is affixed to the back of the tapestry. Tapestries over 130 cm are made from 74% wool. 59% wool for the 90 x 120 cm tapestry.
