Tapestry Pansu
This tapestry is one of the six famous hangings of the Lady of the Unicorn. Five of these hangings have as their subject the five senses. The sixth depicts a richly-dressed lady standing in front of a tent inscribed ” À MON SEUL DÉSIR ” on a blindfold. In this tapestry, the organ, a musical instrument, represents one of the five senses:hearing. The sense of hearing is perfectly represented. All the actors in the scene are listening to the sound of the instrument, whether it’s the lion or the unicorn, who are very attentive, or the next woman, who follows the instrumentalist with her eyes so as not to miss the moment when the bellows need to be activated. A closer look reveals that the lion, representing strength, and the unicorn, representing purity, are also depicted on the organ uprights, highlighting the separation between the follower and the Lady. The latter is exaggeratedly tall to underline her social superiority, a fact confirmed by the richness of her attire. Last but not least, the composition is richly detailed.
