Inherited from the “mille-fleurs” of the Middle Ages and the “artistoches” or “cabbage leaves” of the 16th century, greenery appeared in Flanders, Brussels and Oudenaarde in the early 17th century. No figures, no religious or mythological scenes, just nature, with the occasional animal or building in the background. Here, greenery is omnipresent.
