This tapestry was woven from designs by Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris in the late 19th century. The figure depicted is the goddess Flora. She is one of the most ancient and powerful of Italy’s agrarian goddesses. Every year in spring, she was celebrated in agrarian festivals designed to promote the growth of cereals and fruit trees. Later, she was dedicated to flowers, to which she gave her old Sabine name. The goddess Flora plays the same essential role in the plant world as Venus does in the world of animate beings, both human and animal.
