Ghent Altar” tapestry

This tapestry is a representation of the “Adoration of the Mystic Lamb” panel, also known as the “Ghent Altar”. It is a polyptych painted on wood, a masterpiece of Flemish primitive painting completed in 1432.
This panel, presented in the form of an altarpiece, is the central part. It has been on display in the former baptistery of Ghent’s St. Bavo Cathedral since 1986.
This altarpiece represents a “new conception of art”, in which the idealization of medieval tradition gives way to rigorous observation of nature.
The main panel depicts the adoration of the Lamb of God, by several groups of people absorbed in worship and prayer, and illuminated by a dove representing the Holy Spirit.
