Woodpecker - William Morris, Tapisserie Art de Lys

"Point de Flandres" weave - Tapisserie Art de Lys - XVIII - XIX centuries tapissery

William Morris made the original drawing of the Woodpecker, woven in 1885. This motif, with a very dense background, evoking the verdure with broad leaves of the Renaissance, has practically no perspective effects. The importance of this back-ground also reminds us of the large plants and foliages of Brussels' verdure at the beginning of the 16th century. W.Morris used a limited range of colours, mostly reds, blues and bright greens.

Weaving with ""Point de Flandres" weave" - 50% wool - 40% cotton
